Sometimes I Shop :: March Trunk Club

It's time for another Trunk Club haul! We're going through a transition period with this trunk. My last stylist appears to have left the company, so I've now been assigned Jayme. The first trunk she sent me was definitely off (I wish I'd taken a screenshot!), so I sent her a few of my favorite Pinterest boards and asked her to take another shot at it.  We have a new relationship, so it's really important to be vocal about what you want from your stylist. I tend to be a bit reserved about these sorts of things, but then I remembered - Hey - it's her job to find stuff that I want! No sense in taking a trunk that leaned a little too boho for me just to avoid hurt feelings! My second trunk from Jayme was much better, so here's what she sent me. Sign up to try Trunk Club here.

So a quick refresher - It's $25 to get a trunk, but that money goes towards any purchases you make. If you're a Nordstrom cardholder and use your Nordies card, it's FREE! In this trunk I got one pair of shorts, overalls, one dress, three tops, and three pairs of shoes.

I had been curious about these infamous Rag & Bone booties, but they were too hard to get on and just a little pricey, especially since we're going into spring now. Pass.

This top from Bobeau is SUPER soft! I just checked the website and it comes in several colors and is only $42. I ended up passing because I wasn't crazy about the oatmeal color, and I knew that I'd end up wearing it around the house as loungewear more than anything else, but I'd consider it in a different shade.

SO CUTE RIGHT? These were too small for me - and only come in S/M/L instead of number sizing. As much as I love my Rag & Bone full length overalls, $300 seemed too pricey for such a seasonal item.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I hated both of these tops. I'm not surprised they were included, since it's basically all you can find right now (I hate them too, Jezebel), but these are both a big ole nope.

It's not all doom and gloom though, because I absolutely ADORE this dress. It's the softest jersey fabric that actually feels nice and thick, with POCKETS. I've already dressed it up with heels and a statement necklace, and dressed it down with sneakers and a denim jacket. Keep keep keep! It also helps that it was super affordable. I haven't worn Calson's stuff before, but I'm keeping it on my radar after this dress.

Another unexpected keeper was this pair of gorgeous Steve Madden heels! They've got a decidedly Aquazurra vibe (for a lot less) and are super comfortable. They also look adorable with the black dress above. They're going to get a lot of mileage in this spring and summer. They come in four colors!

I passed on these Alice + Olivia shorts, mostly because I have a pair from The Limited that looks almost identical. They're very cute and well made, though. I wish she'd sent me this jazzy pair instead!

Finally, in my eternal quest to be as basic as possible, I had to keep these Adidas Superstars. This will now be my third pair of non-athletic Adidas and I am apologizing for NOTHING because they're comfy af and look super cute with almost everything. These run a little large, but Jayme made it really easy to exchange them for a smaller size.

All in all, it was a pretty decent first trunk with Jayme. Trunk Club remains one of my favorite ways to shop for new things I might not have seen otherwise, and I'll continue to review them here if you guys are interested. If you'd like to try it for yourself, you can sign up here.

Want to see what I got in some other Trunks? I blogged the last two as well.

Trunk Club Review :: Pt 2

I've finally pulled the trigger on my second Trunk Club! I contacted my lovely stylist Mariel this month to get some stuff for winter and our upcoming trip to Europe. Girlfriend had my back as usual, and I want almost everything in this box. Here's the dish:

For $25, Trunk Club will send you a box of curated items based on a conversation you have with your stylist. Mariel sends me a digital trunk first, so I can give her feedback on her initial picks. After that, she packs a trunk based on the feedback and ships it your way. If you buy anything from the trunk, that initial $25 goes towards your purchase. If not, no worries, you can ship it back for free and you're only out a little bit. Here's what I got and loved this month:

My trunk was HUGE this month. I got a total of 10 items and they were all beautiful. Here's a breakdown on the costs of each item:

She sent me some of her favorite jeans bc they were on sale, and I had a nice variety of price points for everything.

This super thin sweater from Vince is absolutely beautiful, and super soft. I love the way it fit, but I have a cashmere striped sweater from Equipment that made this one feel a little redundant.

I told Mariel I was looking for a suede leather jacket, and MAN did she deliver! This gorgeous burgundy suede moto from blanknyc is one of the coolest jackets I've tried on. The leather is soft and the color (while so terrible here) is gorgeous. I swear it's burgundy. It also comes in tan, red, and purple.

Mariel also sent this field jacket from Madewell, and while I appreciate what they were going for, it was just a little big for me. It actually looks SUPER cute on the website (and it's on sale!) so I think I'd just need to go down a size or two.

When I first showed this sweater off on Snapchat, I thought it was frumpy and ugly. NOW...I kind of LOVE it! It's super soft - from Madewell - and the color is a lovely neutral. The turtleneck is pretty workable too, so now I'm thinking I need to keep it.

This is another great chunky sweater, it was just a little slouchy for me. I got a great similar sweater sans-neck from Forever 21 this week, so I'm sending this one from blanknyc back.

Mariel also sent me an assortment of jeans, which I appreciate, but I'm just not in the market for jeans right now. I tried a few on, and they're super soft, but I passed on all three.

Finally...SHOOOOOEEESSSSS. I got a pair of black booties from Treasure & Bond, and a pair of Ugg all weather boots in this trunk. The T&B booties are super cute, highly recommend if you're looking for some, but again, I'm black-bootied out so I passed on these.

I did, however, LOVE these boots from Ugg! I wanted to take a rain or winter boot to Europe, and I would never have picked these out for myself. They're fully lined with wool and can be worn laced all the way up like you see here, or folded down (like the previous photo). I love getting trunks because my stylist always includes something I wouldn't have normally tried (and it's usually what I buy!). These come in 5 different colors and are built to withstand temps of -20°!

I'm still sorting through what I want to keep and send back - already worn the Uggs, though, so they're staying. Once again, I think Trunk Club goes above and beyond every other styling service and I can't wait to order another box when spring rolls around!

Review :: Rent The Runway Unlimited

Every season, I like to buy a few fresh pieces at the start to refresh my wardrobe. This year, I was having a terrible time. Nothing looked right, fit right, or particularly excited me. I needed some smart work clothes and some breezy weekend clothes, so I tried a few box clubs (like MM LaFleur and Elizabeth & Clarke) to no avail. After weeks of frustration, I decided to give Rent The Runway's Unlimited services a try (with my own $$$, this is not a sponsored gig).

Here's how it works: For $139/month (plus tax - ends up being around $150) you get to rent three items at a time, which you can exchange for new items as much as you like during the month. You can send back 1, 2 or 3 items at a time and they let you pick what's next - it's not a queue situation where you just get blind shipments.

For me, I wanted to make sure I was getting my money's worth. That meant I wanted my rented items for the month to total more than what it would have cost to rent them individually. I ended up achieving this in the first shipment - those items would have cost $200 to rent if I'd rented without Unlimited. In June, I received 11 items total, with a retail value of $3663! The breakdown is below:

Parker Romper $60 Rental / $298 Retail
Marissa Webb Lace Dress $75 Rental / $498 Retail
Cut 25 Pink Sheath $65 Rental / $350 Retail
Rebecca Taylor Shirtdress $80 Rental / $395 Retail
BB Dakota Stripe Pants $30 Rental / $85 Retail
Cut 25 Pink Sheath $65 Rental / $350 Retail
Trina Turk Jumpsuit $75 Rental / $348 Retail
Theory Maxi $70 Rental / $395 Retail
Slate & Willow Colorblock Sheath $55 Rental / $298 Retail
Parker Blue Floral Dress $55 Rental / $298 Retail
Kate Spade Romper $65 Rental / $348 Retail

Total: $695 Rental / $3663 Retail

All in all, I can say with confidence that this is a GREAT deal. If you're the type of person who likes wearing new stuff all the time (I am!) and loves designer duds, you'll love it! You can get a lot of items in a month - dresses, tops, pants, skirts, jewelry, scarves, hats, sunglasses, and bags.

The pros outweigh the cons for me as well. While the monthly price is steep, I've been saving money shopping because I just don't feel the need to do it anymore. I love having new things, and I shop when I'm bored (a deadly combination) so being able to wear a new outfit every week has made me much less likely to browse and buy! It also lets me experiment with looks I wouldn't normally want to spend money on.

Wanna see what I rented in June? The slideshow is below. RSS folks, you may want to click through for the slideshow widget, since it just lists them in readers. And if you're interested in joining Unlimited or Rent The Runway, use my link for $30 off your first order!

There are a couple missing, you'll notice. I got the pink sheath TWICE and these hips were just not having it, and the blue lace dress wouldn't zip up. So they were kind of duds, but will probably rent the blue dress again in a larger size!
