Curly Girl Tips :: How I restyle my curly hair

I love my curly hair. I watched all of Sex and the City in my early 20s, and seeing Carrie Bradshaw's beautiful curls inspired me to embrace my natural texture and learn how to properly fix curls. It has CHANGED my summers - so much easier to wash and go! The thing is, I tend to blow out my hair, straighten it and re-curl it more often than I wear it curly just because it's easy to restyle the next day.

But this year - that changed. I finally have figured out how to restyle my curly hair, and I'm going to share my best tips and tricks with you.

Step One: Wash. Condition. CONDITION SOME MORE.

Obviously. l picked up Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Shampoo, Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Conditioner, and Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Anti-Damage Mask for this post - their main focus is making damaged hair look fabulous. I'm HARD on my hair. Between the bleaching, the heat styling, and the endless ponytails and aggressive brushing, I need all the damage control I can get. I try not to wash my hair too often, so I do a hair mask every time I do to restore all of the moisture I can get.

Step Two: Air hair, don't care.

I have two ways I let my hair dry naturally - if I want Carrie Bradshaw curls, I don't comb through it and try to touch it as little as possible until it dries fully (then I shake it allllll out). If I want looser, beachy waves, I comb through after I get out of the shower.

Step Three: Pineapple Head.

This is the MOST critical step in the restyling process. I use a stretchy little band to scoop all of my head on top of my head. It keeps the curls from getting smashed down by my enormous head, but it's nice and stretchy so it doesn't pull my hair and break it while I sleep. The Gliss helps with that too - it's all Keratin infused to restructure hair and make it up to 90% stronger. Bonus!

Step Four: The restyle

Grab a tapered wand and touch up that top layer! Any pieces that are frizzy or have fallen flat get a couple of seconds with my wand to make them springy again. I usually only have to do this on the second day - these curls stay in tact a little better than my natural ones. I took a selfie every day after washing my hair and wearing it curly so I could show you the progression of my hair each day.

Let's just ignore the fact that I let this hair go to day 5 and 6 - don't worry I still shower if I'm not washing my hair - because this was a weird week and those days I just could not be bothered. The first day is my natural curls, freshly washed and air dried. Day two is after I restyled using my wand. They actually held up incredibly well to day three - then on day four, you can see they've relaxed a bit because I forgot to put it up. When I wake up in the morning, I take out my pineapple hair, put my hands in it up by my scalp, and flip my head over to shake them out. The more body, the better!

If you're sold on the Gliss and want to check out the Ultimate Repair Line, I grabbed mine at Walmart in the shampoo aisle. You can save $5.00 off TWO (2) Schwarzkopf® GLISS™ Shampoo or Conditioner or Treatment with this coupon! All of the elements of Gliss™Hair Repair are meant to work as a little team within their lines - they also have lines for color and moisture!

Date Night Purse Essentials + Date Outfit Ideas

As a notoriously clumsy, messy, and on-the-go gal, I always like to be prepared. There's no point in carrying a giant fancy purse around if I don't have anything in there when I need it! Stain on silk? Got it. Major headache? Zapped. I like to build myself a mini emergency kit for my bag so I never leave home without...anything.

I decided to put together a little purse-mergency kit for date night, since you never know when disaster may strike. I picked up a few of my favorite essentials at Walmart on my way home from work today to throw in my purse for my next night out.

In addition to the obvious things like a small sewing kit, wet wipes, and lip balm, I added a few extras you may not have thought about. Since my husband and I love eating out, I keep Nexium 24HR on hand. Just one day. All-day, all night frequent heartburn protection - because sometimes, we like to go out after dinner and dance our faces off.

After dancing, you wouldn't want to miss out on the goodnight kiss because of a cold, right? Thanks to cooler weather and people's snotty kids, it's smart to have Emergen-C in my purse kit as well. It helps me have more healthy days, more healthy nights and the chewable variety is perfect for the purse.

Finally, don't forget Advil. You can find the smaller vials in the trial section, which are perfect for slipping into a fancy clutch. You can use Advil tablets for headaches, minor arthritis and other joint pain, muscle aches and pains of the common cold, making it an emergency essential for late nights or early mornings.

All three of these are products for every day life, so using them to plan ahead before a big night out is a great way to be prepared for anything on the go.

Of course, what goes in the purse is only half of the struggle. What to WEAR is an entirely different battle. I've put together a couple of my favorite date night looks for anyone in need of inspiration!

What are some of your purse-mergency essentials, and what situations have they gotten you out of? I've made a list of ideas to build your own purse emergency kit below!

Day to Night Curls

I love trying out new hair products, and I've been particularly intrigued by the Conair Infinity Pro Curl Secret curling iron. Could it REALLY work and cut down my morning routine? I was going to put it to the test and find out.

Step one: Find it in the store. It was pretty easy to track down at my local Walmart. I was also looking for the InfinitiPRO Q3 hair dryer, which proved to be a little more difficult to find. They're apparently so popular they were sold out everywhere in Little Rock - I had to make the trek out to Benton to snag one! Here's my face after I found it (PS, you can search for inventory at your local Walmarts online):

Gang's all here! So step two: Wash your hair. This was my most difficult task of the day. Then I pulled the dryer out to see what it could do. It's SO QUIET, you guys. I was seriously impressed by that. It also uses less heat to dry your hair, so it didn't make my hair as frizzy. On the left is what my hair usually looks like after blow drying, on the right is a quick selfie of how it looked after I dried it with the Q3. It was so much smoother than it normally is! My hair is naturally curly, so the fact that it tamed my curls without a round brush (I just used a Conair Velvet Paddle Brush to detangle a little) so well is impressive.

So basically, it feels like a salon quality dryer that's more affordable and easier to find. Moving on to step three: Let's bust open this Curl Secret and see what it can do. Not gonna lie, it was slightly intimidating at first! I was shocked at how easy it was to use, though. After that first curl, I was hooked! I put a video on Instagram of the process if you want to see how it works. In goes hair, out pops curls. So now, it's time to mess with the settings. You can choose between low and high heat, and between three timer settings. It beeps when the curl is done, so the lower the timer, the looser the curl. I went with the loosest curl setting to create some soft waves for an everyday look.

Fabulous, right? I wasn't sure how it would work with shorter hair but this thing is legit! Once I got the hang of it, the entire process went quickly and felt much less fussy. Next I wanted to do an undo look for night, so I turned up the curls to the longest timer setting. This worked really well and I came out with some killer curls! I decided to pin them to the side with some Conair bobby pins to make a sort of updo for a night look.

This is an easy look to recreate. I just started twisting and pinning hair around the back of my head and then let the hair cascade over my shoulder. Instant old Hollywood vibe.

All in all, I think this is a handy little hair doodad! I can't wait to see how it fits into my morning routine. Anyone else try the Curl Secret or Q3 dryer and love it?
